Origin, diffusion and economic characteristics
Spanish breed in danger of extinction.
The name Extremeña Azul comes from the geographical region it originally occupied and the color of its plumage. The Extremeña Azul breed began to take shape as such in the 1980s. In 1991 the Junta de Extremadura started a recovery program for the Extremeña Azul chicken.
Diffusion area: mainly in the province of Badajoz, and in some areas of the province of Cáceres.
Double attitude: meat and eggs.
It is an intermediate chicken between the Mediterranean type and the Atlantic type. The crest is simple and the tarsi are bare.
Three colors: gray, off-white (white dotted with gray or black) and black (with green iridescence).
- Rooster: from 2,5 to 4,2 Kg
- Chicken: from 1.3 to 3.2 kg
